Controller – Birmingham, AL

Warren Averett Staffing and Recruiting is looking for an experienced Controller to join an established company in Birmingham, AL. The ideal candidate will have Job Cost accounting knowledge based around the construction industry.


  • Overseeing all aspects of accounting; billing, financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cost accounting, revenue recognition, and various special analyses
  • Maintaining documented system of accounting policies and operations
  • Assuring assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performing cost control activities; monitoring revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control
  • Communicating financial metrics to senior management
  • Communicating official financial plans, policies, and procedures to staff and others dealing with the financial affairs of the Company
  • Defining benchmark and implement operational best practices
  • Establishing and maintaining internal control procedures and to assure that state and national standard accounting procedures are maintained
  • Performing monthly review of general ledger accounts and investigating large and/or unusual activity
  • Advising on financial analyses and decision-making regarding capital investments, pricing, contract negotiations, significant costs, benchmarks, and other matters with management
  • Creating budgets and forecasts
  • Overseeing accounts payable processing; overseeing billings and accounts receivables
  • Approving invoices that need to be paid
  • Directing the determination of depreciation rates to apply capital assets
  • Preparing reports required by regulatory agencies; directing preparation of state and federal reports, including tax reports
  • Supervising and preparing labor distributions
  • Supervising and maintaining the fixed asset accounts of the Company


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration with an emphasis in Accounting, or a related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) license preferred
  • Previous experience as an accountant, accounting supervisor, or manager; Ideal candidate has 5 to 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Construction and/or Manufacturing industry experience ideal
  • Excellent computer skills; experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; Access, database, or other system knowledge
  • Proficiency with accounting software and experience with a software system implementation
  • Advanced knowledge of Cost Accounting
  • Ability to deliver quality work on tight deadlines, with strong organization and priority setting skills
  • Considerable knowledge of internal control procedures and management information systems
  • Considerable knowledge of office automation and computerized financial applications
  • Considerable knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and human resources functions
  • Must be a strong and organized leader with strong analytical and problem- solving abilities.
  • Working knowledge of budgetary, accounting, and reporting systems
