Warren Averett Workplace Consulting Manager Andrea Holyfield recently presented at the DisruptHR conference held in Atlanta. DisruptHR is an information exchange event series that seeks to “energize, inform and empower people in the HR field.” Together, the region’s top talent in HR, including practitioners, corporate executives and thought leaders, explore the future of HR.

The DisruptHR events feature quick, five-minute speeches in which professionals leverage their expertise to share advice with their fellow HR professionals. Holyfield presented “Trolling for Authentic Relationships,” which focused on building relationships and the importance of having a strong professional network.

Much of Holyfield’s role at Warren Averett Workplace revolves around guiding professionals who have been separated from their employers through the transition and job search.

“I’ve been involved in this space long enough to find one thing that is consistent for everyone,” she says of her experience in outplacement services. “There is one ingredient in the sauce that determines whether my client sinks or swims, and this one thing is something that HR professionals as a whole don’t do well.”

So, what is this one thing?

“You need to troll for authentic relationships,” emphasized Holyfield. It is important to build professional relationships, even if you are not undergoing a career transition or seeking a new job, because one day, it is likely that you will be looking for a new job.

Holyfield offers three steps you can take to launch an authentic relationship strategy:

  1. Get active on LinkedIn.
  2. Have authentic conversations.
  3. Spend one hour per week doing something you enjoy. When you start doing things that you authentically enjoy, you will connect with others authentically.
