Warren Averett CPAs and Advisors’ Paul Perry, FHFMA, CISM, CITP, CPA, CDPSE was recently featured as a contributor to the Birmingham Business Journal’s (BBJ) Table of Experts Series in the segment Cyber Security in the Age of COVID-19.
The BBJ’s Table of Expert Series showcases expertise about important topics in the business industry from local professionals. The Cyber Security in the Age of COVID-19 segment focused on how working from home can create an additional layer of cybersecurity risks. Paul Perry and several other local experts discussed safeguarding IT infrastructures and protecting information while in a remote workplace.
When it comes to safeguarding your IT workforce with a remote workforce, Perry said, “Always start with a risk assessment to know where you are vulnerable and take action to curb as much exposure as possible. Remote employees – and their devices and actions – need to be treated differently than those who work from the secured company locations. For example, companies should create a remote work policy and require specific things of those employees, such as a dedicated work space that can be locked, updating home wireless routers, changing default access information, removing smart home devices from the remote work space, and prohibiting the use of public Wi-Fi networks without a solid VPN connection. In addition, employees should receive constant security awareness training on updated threats and opportunities for exposure.”
