Warren Averett - Kevin WangWarren Averett’s Kevin Wang, CPA, CITP, CGFM, of the firm’s Birmingham accounting and advisory office, was recently featured in the July issue of the Journal of Accountancy. Wang, the firm’s Director of Innovation, discussed the power of technology, the importance of change and what it’s like to work at the intersection of accounting and technology.

The Journal of Accountancy is AICPA’s national resource for CPAs, providing professional and regulatory updates, breaking news and videos.

When asked how technology is causing change in the industry, Wang said, “I see there is so much data being generated every day, and it is growing exponentially. CPAs today need the knowledge to process that data, understand it, put multiple data sources together and comprehend the story it tells. Machine learning and other areas of artificial intelligence are right on the horizon. Automation is going to replace many of the manual tasks we do, and accounting professionals will need to upskill themselves to stay in demand. Change may be hard, but it’s necessary to move forward.”

Wang emphasized that learning about technology is crucial, as it can help CPAs be more successful.

Kevin Wang joined Warren Averett in 2010 and transitioned from auditing to the Director of Innovation in 2016. Kevin’s responsibilities are to identify and propose areas where technology, organizational structure and day-to-day practices can be combined and refined to drive the firm towards our business goals. He graduated from Auburn University and in 2017, was named as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s Rising Stars in Technology and Innovation.
