Hillsborough County, Florida, Sets Date for Reinstating Surtaxes
Late last year, Hillsborough County, Florida, announced that it would stop collecting the 0.5% indigent care surtax and the 0.5% local government infrastructure surtax as of January 1, 2025. This meant that the total sales tax rate in Hillsborough County would temporarily be reduced to 6.5%, which includes the 6% state tax and a 0.5% school tax.
The date that the discretionary surtaxes would be reinstated was not specified in original communications, but the state of Florida has since issued a Taxpayer Information Publication indicating that those surtaxes will be reinstated on June 1, 2025.
Companies conducting business within Hillsborough County use many methods to determine sales tax on invoices. If systems are not fully automated, companies will need to make sure sales tax rates are updated in time to reinstate the collection of these taxes. Companies may also want to accelerate any non-exempt asset or consumable purchases that might be made otherwise in June to avoid this tax.
